Zine Semaine 2 – droits laissés/droits volés est une exposition collective présentant des œuvres originales et imprimées/reproduites: fanzines, bandes-dessinées, affiches, textes, poésie, tracts, pamphlets, dans l’esprit du D.I.Y. Cette année, nous présenterons des œuvres qui questionnent la problématique du droit d’auteur, que ce soit à travers leur contenu ou leur contenant, et d’artistes qui travaillent avec la récupération, la citation, la parodie, le pastiche ou encore des œuvres qui sont libres de droits.

Fire with Water Exhibition – For the Sexual Assault Awareness Week.
SACOMSS (Sexual Assault Centre of the McGill Students’ Society) is hosting an exhibit, performance and workshop as part of the Sexual Assault Awareness Week. We are hoping to create a safe space for artistic responses to sexual violence and its intersecting themes.

Richard Beaulieu, né en 1961, est auteur de bandes dessinées, illustrateur et peintre. Plus connu des amateurs de bande-dessinée underground sous le nom de Richard Suicide (et parfois de William Parano), il se rattache à la Montreal Comix Scene (un des mouvements importants de la bande dessinée québécoise), à laquelle appartiennent Henriette Valium, Julie Doucet et Luc Giard.
Essentiellement constituée d’histoires courtes, son œuvre met en scène, sous une urbanité écrasante, une faune bigarrée où pullulent d’innombrables mutants : canards à deux têtes, cochons armés de revolvers, êtres mi-homme mi-pizza, squeegee punks, etc. Son style joyeusement insolent mêle, à la fois avec humour et dans un esprit de rébellion, les références du monde de l’enfance avec celles, plus tordues, du monde adulte. Parmi les thèmes qu’il affectionne, notons la chronique de la misère urbaine, la critique des puissants ou de la pollution chimique.
Graphiquement, outre ses références à la culture cartoon, le style de l’auteur se distingue par un trait noir souple, d’une grande lisibilité mais saturant les cases de manière très dense, et des couleurs vives. Dans certaines histoires, le traitement « empilé » des cases fait que celles-ci semblent vouloir déborder les unes sur les autres. L’auteur affiche en outre une prédilection pour une langue joual et inventive, volontairement dysorthographique.
Ses histoires ont souvent comme toile de fond le quartier Centre-Sud de Montréal, et plus particulièrement le coin des rues Cartier et Ontario, que l’auteur qualifie de «centre du monde» (ou de l’univers), comme en témoigne la série de ses Chroniques de la rue Cartier. D’ailleurs, en même temps que celles-ci, Pierre Sirois (Siris), un auteur duquel il est proche, réalise de son côté Le Zoo de la rue Cartier.
La production de l’auteur se situe largement du côté des fanzines, ce qui explique la difficulté à la retrouver aujourd’hui. Autrement, il a collaboré à la presse culturelle montréalaise, réalisant notamment des strips pour l’hebdomadaire Ici en 1997-98 (compilés dans l’album Strippes) et plusieurs illustrations pour l’hebdomadaire Montreal Mirror. Plus récemment, il a participé aux éditions 2008 et 2010 de l’événement des 48hBD de Montréal.
Ses peintures à l’acrylique ont de nombreuses fois été exposées, notamment à la microbrasserie Le Cheval blanc, point de rencontre historique de la scène bande-dessinée à Montréal.
Richard Beaulieu, born in 1961, is a cartoonist, illustrator and painter. Mostly known by underground comic fans under the name Richard Suicide (and sometimes William Parano), he is associated with the Montreal Comix Scene (one of the major movements of Quebec comics), to which belong Henriette Valium, Julie Doucet and Luc Giard.
Essentially consisting of short stories, his work depicts, in an overwhelming urbanity, a colourful fauna teeming countless mutants: two-headed ducks, pigs armed with revolvers, half-human, half-pizza beings, squeegee punks, etc. His cheerfully insolent style mixes, both humour and a spirit of rebellion, references to the world of childhood with the more twisted ones of the adult world. Among the topics he likes, note the chronicle of urban poverty, the criticism of power and chemical pollution.
Graphically, in addition to its cartoon culture references, the author’s style is distinguished by a black , flexible and highly legible stroke, densely saturated boxes, and bright colors. In some stories, the « stacked » treatment of the frames makes them seem like they want to run over each other. The author also displays a predilection for a voluntarily dyslexic joual and inventive language.
His stories often have as a backdrop the Centre-Sud district of Montreal, especially the corner of Cartier and Ontario, which the author calls « the center of the world » (or the universe), as evidenced by the his series Chroniques de la rue Cartier. Along with these, Pierre Sirois (Siris), an author whom he is close to, carries out for his part Le Zoo de la rue Cartier.
The production of the author is largely comprised of zines, which explains the difficulty in finding his work today. Otherwise, he has worked with the city’s cultural media, including producing strips for the weekly Ici in 1997-98 (compiled in the Strippes album) and several illustrations for the weekly Montreal Mirror. More recently, he participated in the 2008 and 2010 editions of the event 48hBD de Montréal.
His acrylic paintings have been exhibited many times, including at Le Cheval Blanc microbrewery, a meeting point of the historical comic scene in Montreal.

Showcasing the talents of a wide variety of sound artists, this synaesthetic experiment deprives the audience of their sight to provide an immersive experience where the aural comes to the forefront. From this bi-monthly night you can expect to hear sound art ranging from the « musical » to noise and everything in between. Close your eyes and open your ears!

e. littleforest is the solo project of Ellen Smallwood: a multi-disciplinary artist, writer/director, and musician based in Montreal. Ellen creates melodic, storybook worlds that mirror fantasy and reality, while re-appropriating traditional icons of the “girl experience”. Her work juxtaposes a personal and political lens; examining issues of medical/ technical intervention, colonization vs. identities, and environmental destruction. She is the Creative Director/ Songstress for art rock project Teen Sleuth, working closely with Frances Mckenzie to create an artistic inquest; interpreting songs/ concepts through a feminist lens, and inviting the viewer to experience and explore other realms. Teen Sleuth has performed in the Htmlles Biennale, Festival Phenomena, The Musicgallery’s Avant Pop Series, Pop Montreal, and the Montreal Fringe. e.littleforest will fuse songbooks, storytelling, and sound art- weaving new threads with unlikely brainwaves.

OWLA (Olivia Kaplan and Juliette Allen) combines acoustic and electronic drones with melodic influences of folk music from north america and eastern europe. Our material is mostly improvised, and our sets change all the time. GAMBLETRON is a sound artist, musician, and improviser based out of Montréal who is known for her noise-electronic improvisations, roving radio transmission “Field Trips”, experimental noise karaoke and for curating performances in unique outdoors locations. She creates loud, glitch, textural soundscapes with a slight reference to dance music accompanied by lo-fi, circuit bent toys, found objects, musical saw, home made mics, radios, bowed bike wheels, cheap synths, reel2reels and other types of electronics. Gambletron has toured internationally and participated in various festivals and residencies, some of which include the Donau Festival (AU), Nuit Sonores (FR) and Etoilles Polaires (BE). She is also found performing and collaborating in numerous projects on Constellation Records such as Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista, Hrsta, Clues, and Matana Robert’s Coin Coin. She plays with Greenland’s current pop sensation, Nive Nielsen and the Deer Children.

Esther Splett and Robyn Fadden: Brother Moon, Sister Sun: Esther Splett and Robyn Fadden play harp, synths, beats and samples to tell coming-of-age stories about puberty, trauma, shifting gender and sexual orientation, hating nice things, snails, diva cups and puppy dogs’ tails, eroticizing menstrual blood, eroticizing violence, being a girl and feeling like a girl, being a girl and not feeling like a girl, not being a girl, dream logic, fairy tales, porn logic, sex negativity as resistance, being dumb as resistance and resistance as resistance. Brother Moon, Sister Sun is part folk-drenched wet-dream, part electro-blow-dried waking nightmare. Robyn Fadden is a writer who listens a lot and sometimes turns people and ideas into words and words into feelings and feelings into music. She is also in the band All Sounds Gone. Esther Splett is a performance artist, professional creep and mind-slut who wants you to know she is actually a « nice » person. She sings in the psychedelic rock band Sacral Nerves.
Christine Brezina travaille la surface et la ligne en installation comme on pourrait le faire
en dessin. Les installations présentées dans cette exposition sont une forme de poésie,
de narration qui vise à faire vivre une expérience au spectateur. Elle utilise un langage abstrait et minimal où les couleurs, les formes et les références culturelles donnent les repères aux spectateurs. Ses pièces cherchent à séduire et à charmer, elles prennent parfois la forme d’un paysage ou d’un décor, parfois celle d’une action, parfois celle
d’un acteur ou même d’une scène. C’est lors de sa résidence à RATS 9 qu’elle a débuté le travail qu’elle présentera à la galerie du 9 au 23 février 2013.
Christine Brezina vit et travaille à Ville-Marie au Témiscamingue. Elle a étudié en scénographie à l’UQAM, en arts Visuels à l’Université Concordia ainsi qu’aux Beaux-Arts de Lyon. Elle s’intéresse principalement à l’installation, la sculpture et la photographie.
Christine Brezina works with surface and line in installation the way one might in drawings. The installation presented in this exhibition are a form of poetry, or narration with the aim of giving the spectator a lived experience. She uses an abstract and minimal language where colors, shapes and cultural references serves as landmarks for the spectator. Her pieces intend to seduce and charm, sometimes taking the form of a landscape or setting, sometimes an action, sometimes taking the form of an actor or even just a the stage in itself. It is during her residency at the RATS 9 Gallery that she began developing this particular body of work that she will be presenting at the gallery from February 9th to 23rd.
Christine Brezina lives and works in Ville-Marie in the Témiscamingue. She studied scenography at UQAM, Visual Arts at Concordia and Fine Arts in Lyon. Her main interest is in installation, sculpture and photography.

Dès le 10 janvier, RATS 9 présente une rétrospective photo et vidéo des événements baptisés Meow Mix, incontournables de la scène gaie montréalaise au cours des 15 dernières années. La dernière soirée de cet événement a été présentée en juin dernier et l’exposition Meow Mix Retrospective se veut l’occasion de présenter les archives de ces soirées mémorables et d’en faire revivre l’effervescence.
Les soirées Meow Mix ont été créées en 1997 par la productrice et artiste Miriam Ginestier, comme une alternative à ce qui était offert dans le Village. Ciblant particulièrement les femmes se définissant comme queer, les Meow Mix étaient totalement inclusifs, prenant soin de mentionner que TOUS leurs ami(e)s étaient les bienvenus. La portion dance party de la soirée était systématiquement précédée de performances de type cabaret mettant en scène des artistes d’avant-garde locaux et d’ailleurs, dont les numéros exploraient et revisitaient les sensualités masculines et féminines. Ainsi, ces véritables happenings furent également l’occasion d’approfondir la réflexion sur la question du genre, en présentant des performances à la fois innovatrices et subversives.
Les soirées Meow Mix ont été marquantes pour la culture queer de Montréal et les archives de ces soirées imposent qu’elles soient présentées et appréciées. Meow Mix a été un tremplin artistique pour de nombreux-ses créateurs-trices et personnalités de Montréal incluant Nathalie Claude, Alexis O’Hara, 2boys.tv, Dayna McLeod entre autres.
C’est à Miriam Ginestier, productrice indépendante et artiste, qu’on doit l’initiative du Meow Mix. Ayant travaillé durant plus de 15 ans dans le milieu des arts de la scène, devant la caméra et en coulisse, elle est à l’origine de nombreux événements comme Le Boudoir et le festival Edgy Women. Miriam est actuellement directrice artistique au Studio 303, lieu de diffusion et de soutien pour la danse et l’art indiscipliné à Montréal
Sasha Brunelle fut photographe régulière des soirées Meow Mix au cours de plusieurs années. Avec un parcours en production théâtrale et en photographie commerciale, sa démarche s’inscrit dans un désir de dévoiler la communauté LGBTQ au public. Elle choisit de documenter la scène de la communauté lesbienne et souhaite la partager un jour avec les communautés d’ailleurs. Initiative de Brunelle, Meow Mix Rétrospective s’inscrit dans cette démarche en y présentant une partie de son travail sous forme de photos grand format.

Beginning January 10th, RATS 9 will be presenting a photo and video retrospective of Meow Mix, a landmark event in the Montreal gay scene of the last 15 years. The final edition of this event took place last June. Meow Mix Retrospective, as an exhibition, will be the occasion to showcase the archives of these memorable nights and to bring back to life their effervescence.
Meow Mix was created in 1997 by the producer and artist Miriam Ginestier. Intended as an alternative to the Village scene, the event was fully inclusive, making it clear in every invitation to all the “bent girls” out there, that their buddies (regardless of gender or sexual orientation) were always welcome. The night’s dance party was systematically preceded by an evening of cabaret style performances, staging avant-garde local and international artists. Beyond pure entertainment, these happenings were also an opportunity to deepen the reflection on gender issues, presenting performances which were both innovative and subversive.
The Meow Mix events were a powerful influence on Montreal queer culture as it stands today and provided an invaluable space for experimentation for numerous artists and personalities of Montreal, including Nathalie Claude, Alexis O’Hara, 2boys.tv, Dayna McLeod and many others.
It is to Miriam Ginestier, independent producer and artist, that we owe the Meow Mix initiative. Working in the performing arts for over 15 years, in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes, she is the instigator of many events such as Le Boudoir and the Edgy Women festival. Miriam is currently the Artistic Director of Studio 303, a space presents and supports dance and interdisciplinary performance in Montreal.
Sasha Brunelle has been a regular photographer of the Meow Mix nights for many years. With a background in theatre production and commercial photography, her artistic statement falls in with a desire to unveil the LGBTQ community to the public. She chose to document the lesbian community scene to eventually share it with communities from elsewhere. From Brunelle’s initiative, “Meow Mix Retrospective” goes along the lines of her approach and will be presenting part of her work as large size photography.
The exhibition will showcase pictures and videos recorded between 1997 and 2012 by Miriam Ginestier, Sasha Brunelle, Viva Delorme and Valérie Sangin.

Piece: big chocolate flavour’s half hour piece is a collage of old educational films accompanied by a live soundtrack performed on 12 string electric guitar, toy piano, sampler and a wooden crate (drum). The tunes are mostly orchestrated with moments of inspiration. Followed by handmade truffles.
KENDAL ZIER
Piece: an acousmatic narration exploring the inner voices of discrete sounds and their intercommunication
BETH LAMB (AKA Tiffany Paige and Kelly Elizabeth)
Piece: Dolly Deluxxe is a multidisciplinary performance project by Tiffany Paige and Kelly Elizabeth, which interacts with fantasy and ritual through doll metaphors. Our piece is a collage of children’s songs using live and recorded elements.
JULIE MATSON
Piece: Inspired by the Halifax explosion of 1917, Matson’s piece evokes the disambiguation of this disaster, while embodying the feeling of survival and destruction during such a tumultuous time. It is dedicated to the memory of her grandfather, who was blinded during the explosion.
Bio: Julie Matson is a Vancouver-born, Montreal-based, sound artist and musician dedicated to exploring the aural relationships of difficulty and beauty. Performing for the past fifteen years, Julie has amassed a vast range of musical cultivation, enabling her to fully explore the medium of sound. Her current projects include Echo Beach, an experimental, gloomy dark synth band, as well as 2600.1, a glitchy 8 bit noise project, made with video game systems. She also performs under the moniker AB/7A, an intellectual harsh noise project dedicated to a full-faceted sound range with minimal gear. This past November, she has a soundscape and video installation in the 10th edition of Htmlles, a feminist digital arts and media festival in Montreal. In the summer of 2012, she conducted an experimental music workshop at Montreal’s Rock Camp for Girls, a music camp dedicated to empowering young girls through music making and community building.
FRANCOIS GIROUARD
Bio: François Girouard est un compositeur, multi-instrumentiste et vidéaste né à Joliette en 1976. Ses études en composition électroacoustique l’ont amener à créer plusieurs musiques pour la danse et le théâtre, il a entre autre collaboré avec Marie Béland, Virginia Preston, Andrew Tay, Frédéric Gravel, Matériaux Composites, Noé Cropsal et Myriam Larose. En 2012 il crée une performance solo, 5 courtes pièces pour une valise et son contenu, présentée au Festival de Théâtre de Rue de Lachine. En parallèle, son groupe Curse in the Woods a lancé l’album …The Deal They Made sur lequel il joue la batterie, le banjo et la scie musicale. Comme guitariste, il a évolué dans plusieurs formations montréalaises, dont le groupe The Frootfly, avec lequel il a enregistré 3 albums. On le retrouvait aussi derrière la batterie de la défunte formation Dynamo Coléoptera, avec laquelle il a produit et réalisé leur album éponyme. Son travail vidéographique a parcouru le globe, quelques-unes de ses oeuvres ont été présentées dans plusieurs festivals internationaux, dont le Pärnu International Film & Video Festival en Estonie, SOUNDPlay à Toronto, Outer Limits à New York, ISEA 2000 à Paris et Électra à Montréal. Plus récemment, il a participer à de nombreux concerts au Canada et aux États-Unis avec les groupes Curse in the Woods et Music for Money.

Bio: Graduate from Quebec’s music conservatory, He now plays with various ensembles going from classical to jazz, pop-rock and electronic music. He had the opportunity to play over 500 shows. These shows where given trough Canada, USA, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, England, Poland, Slovakia, Hungria and Central America.

Piece: Two songs from her solo performance, which is a mix of soul and blues moods, accompanied with an organ keyboard, and some vocal polyphonic loops with a loop station.
Bio: A dusty road leading to a crossroad, a sun-drenched beach, a bushfire, homegrown fruits from the garden, a dog, the light feel of freedom: these are a few snapshots from Sofia Brunetta’s songs, between country and city, blues and psychedelia, the match and clash of vocal loops and soul moods, the sound of vintage organs and sparkly guitars.

Bio: Marco Paulo Santos has been part of the Montreal music scene for the last decade as a vocalist for both, experimental and pop oriented projects. While Needle Landscape and Mundplastiken fulfilled his exploratory side, Fear Eat Soul and now Pyongyang answer to his pop, soul and post-punk influences. This evening, Marco Paulo will, at last, reunite and confront his contradictions with his voice and music.

Queer-Love-Action est une exposition de peintures récentes et du zine Adorno Porno.
Illuminés par une palette chaude et éclatante de verts et d’oranges lascifs,
les personnages de ces peintures sont représentés dans des moments d’intimité
pour lesquels le spectateur devient voyeur. De différentes façons, ces scènes capturent une anxiété ironique, un dialogue tacite de délire épisodique, de personnages languissant dans des rivières abstraites, caricatures de lampes éclairant des godemichés.
La plaisanterie n’est ni sur les personnages ni sur les spectateurs; ces images
sont une extension de la mémoire fluide d’une romance domestique fictive.
L’imitation des représentations de l’amour trouvées dans les formes narratives cinématographiques joue un rôle politique dans la définition hégémonique de l’identité
de genre. Dans des environnements familiers, de nouvelles notions d’identité individuelle peuvent être présentées et acceptées, véhiculées comme normatives à travers
la sociabilité de leur environnement. Meyers présente ses peintures comme des lieux
pour errer et des territoires où se réchauffer.
Inspiré par le lexique sexuel de Lee Lozano, Adorno Porno est une accumulation d’imagerie utopique liée à la représentation des genres et à la sexualité facétieuse.
La production automatiste de centaine de dessins a abouti à la création d’un petit livre intime empli d’une imagerie auto-réflective. Se terminant avec un dessin d’un sein magasinant pour d’autres seins, ce livre s’infiltre dans l’inconscient avec une intensité poignante à propos de l’état du féminisme postmoderne.
Jenna Meyers est une peintre sud-africaine travaillant l’abstraction figurative. Meyers possède un Baccalauréat en Beaux Arts – Peinture et Dessin de la Tyler School of Art
de Temple University. Elle obtiendra sa Maîtrise en beaux-arts – Peinture et Dessin
de l’université Concordia en 2013. Leur thèse de recherche intègre le phénomène
queer, la représentation sociale-domestique, et la représentation historique du genre
en peinture. Le travail de Meyers a été exposé dans des centres d’artistes autogérés
et dans des galeries commerciales aux États-Unis et au Canada. À la fois dans sa vie personnelle et au travail, Jenna Meyers établit l’équilibre d’un cadre conceptuel
de principes transformateurs de l’identité au sein d’habitudes de vie quotidienne,
créant des œuvres qui sont une multitude de voies vers l’acceptation des différentes possibilités d’identité et de lieu.
Queer-Love-Action is an exhibition of recent paintings and Adorno Porno,
the soft cover zine.
Illuminated by a hot glowing palette of greens and prurient oranges, the characters
in these paintings are portrayed in moments of intimacy where the audience becomes
a voyeur. Variously, these scenes capture a humorous anxiety, an unspoken dialogue
of episodic mania, figures languishing in abstract rivers, cartoon lamps lighting dildos.
The joke is neither on the characters or the audience; these pictures are an extension
of fluid memory of fictional domestic romance. The act of mimicking representations of love found in cinematic narrative forms plays a political role in defining hegemonic gender identities. Within familiar environments, new notions of personhood can be introduced
and accepted, mediated as normative through the sociability of their surroundings.
Meyers presents their paintings as places to wander and territory to warm to.
Inspired by the sexual lexicon of Lee Lozano, Adorno Porno is an accumulation of utopian imagery related to gender representation and jocose sexuality. Automatist production
of hundreds of drawings resulted in a small intimate book of self-reflective imagery.
Ending in a drawing of a boob shopping for other boobs, this book permeates
the subconscious with poignancy about the state of post-modern feminism.
Jenna Meyers is a South African painter who works in figurative abstraction, Meyers received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Tyler School of Art: Temple University.
They will receive an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University in 2013.
Their thesis research includes queer phenomenology, social-domestic representation
and the historical representation of gender in painting. Meyers’ work has been exhibited
in artist run centres and commercial galleries in the United States & Canada. In both their life and their work, Jenna Meyers balances a conceptual framework of transformative principles of identity within the practices of everyday life, creating paintings as multiple pathways to engaging and accepting diverse possibilities of person and place.

L’exposition Queer Portraits 2010-2012 à la galerie RATS 9 présentera une série de photographies issues des deux dernières années de la pratique artistique de JJ Levine, mettant l’emphase sur ses œuvres les plus récentes. Queer Portraits est une série de portraits en couleur de grand format représentant la communauté de JJ Levine à Montréal. Ce projet capture les relations émotionnelles complexes qu’il partage avec ses ami/es, ses amant/es et sa famille. Son travail aborde des problématiques liées au genre, à la sexualité et aux espaces queer. Chaque portrait est pris dans une atmosphère domestique différente qui est définie par des couleurs saturées et, dans la plupart des cas, des arrière-plans discursifs. À l’aide d’un éclairage professionnel et d’un appareil photo argentique de format moyen, il installe un studio dans chaque environnement domestique et place intentionnellement chaque meuble et objet apparaissant dans le cadrage. Ces paramètres visent à soulever des questions en lien avec l’espace queer privé comme endroit privilégié de développement communautaire et d’expression de genres et de sexualités souvent marginalisés dans la sphère publique. Levine est également intéressé à explorer la relation entre photographe et sujet. Les oeuvres de Levine illustrent les solides liens de confiance existant entre lui et ses ami/es dans chacun de ses portraits. À travers ces portraits de personnes queer et trans présentes dans sa vie, il explore sa propre identité comme artiste genderqueer, non-conformiste de genre. Levine est intéressé à créer des représentations de ferveur, de beauté et de résistance à travers le regard de confrontation de ses sujets et d’une esthétique culturelle collective.
JJ Levine est un/e artiste de Montréal qui fait du portrait intimiste. Levine détient

This exhibition of Queer Portraits 2010-2012 at RATS 9 Gallery will showcase a cohesive series of images from the past two years of JJ Levine’s art practice, with a strong focus on their most recent works. Queer Portraits is an ongoing series of large-scale colour photographs of Levine’s community in Montreal. This project captures the complex emotional relationships that they have with their friends, lovers, and siblings. Levine’s work explores issues surrounding gender, sexuality, and queer space. Each portrait is taken in a different domestic setting, characterized by saturated colours and often discursive backgrounds. Using professional lighting and a medium format film camera, Levine creates a studio within each home environment, and intentionally places every piece of furniture and object that appears within the frame. These settings are intended to raise questions regarding private queer space as a realm for the development of community and the expression of genders and sexualities that are often marginalized within the public sphere.
Queer Portraits explores the relationship between photographer and subject. Levine’s work exposes the strong element of trust that exists between themself and their friends who appear in each photograph. Through these portraits of queer and trans people
in Levine’s community, Levine explores their own identity as a genderqueer artist.
This work expresses fierceness, beauty, and resistance through the confrontational gaze
of the subjects and the aesthetic of a queer culture. JJ Levine is a Montreal-based
artist who works in intimate portraiture. Levine received a BFA in Photography and Interdisciplinary Studies in Sexuality from Concordia University. Their photography explores issues surrounding gender, sexuality, self-identity, and queer space. Levine’s work has been exhibited at artist-run centres, commercial galleries, art festivals and academic conferences across Canada, the United States, and Europe. As well, Levine has guest lectured for several university courses and has been featured in Gender Studies journals and art photography magazines internationally. Levine’s artistic practice balances
a political agenda with a strong formal aesthetic.

Le Collectif RATS 9 vous invite à sa célébration païenne de l’équinoxe d’automne. Rassemblant les œuvres d’une trentaine d’artistes provenant d’horizons différents
et parfois diamétralement opposés, l’exposition Néofolk se veut un terrain d’échange
pour questionner les frontières entre artisanat et art, entre amateurisme
et professionnalisme, entre outsider et mainstream.
À l’origine du projet, nous avons lancé un appel sous forme de liste de mots clés.
Nous voulions voir des œuvres qui exploraient une esthétique de marché aux puces
de grange, de vente de garage, d’éclectisme victorien, d’orientalisme postcolonial,
de kitsch soviétique, de kitsch de chalet québécois, de nostalgia, de recyclage, d’assemblage, d’arte povera, et de tout ce qui suit : anachronisme, objets trouvés, art outsider, bad art, célébration païenne, art en vrac, foire agricole, souk, bazar, carnaval, rassemblement populaire, fête foraine, corne d’abondance, mardi gras, autel Voodoo, taxidermie, tableau de famille, kermesse et ta mère.
